What is Roller Blades?

2 to 4 player, split-screen party game. Grab a medieval weapon, ride on your skates and knock friends over to score points in a medieval skating fighting game.

Medieval combat

Players selected their weapons and skates. Weapons would have different attack methods, allowing you to knock players over. These included the Shield, lance and Hammer bow.

The player would always be moving on skates which had different speeds, armour and interactions with the map. These included rollerblades and skateboards.

Combat

The player had a balance metre as their health. If they take damage or hit a wall they lose balance which will make their steering drift randomly.

The player also had a 'lethal' mechanic. All weapons increase in power the longer they are held down. Using your weapon for long enough would make a one-shot attack but this drained the users balance which made risky plays.

Reflection

I learnt a lot about multiplayer behaviour in this project, the rings of fire and power ups were added to promote players moving around the map and not chase each other's tails.

This game is very clunky and I was actually too embarrassed to let anyone play test it for months, but. Seeing how happy it made students and getting good constructive feedback made me more open to showing off games and to have more confidence in my work.
